88cm twelve-year-old Maruyama Showa beats out British owned Maruten Three Step Sakai Kohaku to take Grand Champion of the All Japan Show.

Futoshi Maruyama of Maruyama Fish Farms in Isawa stood stunned with tears of joy streaming down his face as he heard the announcement that the koi he bred had been selected as Grand Champion. It took 101 judges three votes to come to the closely contested decision, with the Maruyama Showa beating out a stunning three step Kohaku from Sakai of Hiroshima, two impressive Showa from up and coming young breeder Ueno, and a two step Kohaku bred by Momotaro of Okayama.

Futoshi recalls being scolded by his father (Gengi Maruyama of Kagurabeni Fame) 11 years ago for selling this Showa as a yearling to a hobbyist at an auction for a mere $2,000.00. Apparently his father had said "You had best give up being a breeder if you are going to let go of fish of this caliber as tosai!" It looks like Futoshi may have the last word on this topic.
