Niigata to Begin Rebuilding

Niigata to Begin Rebuilding
December 28, 2004

The Japanese government announced it has earmarked funds to help the koi breeders who were devastated by the recent earthquakes to rebuild their facilities. Work will not be able to start immediately, as the area effected is currently under several feet of snow and is expected to remain snowed in until
March 2005.

In spite of the government's efforts, there will undoubtedly be an acute shortage of koi for the upcoming 2005 season. Japanese Koi Breeders Association reports that over 120 koi breeders in the area have been seriously impacted, with koi losses currently estimated to exceed 40%.

Initial rebuilding efforts will focus on constructing new ponds for hatching and rearing koi fry.
